This is how one of the most anticipated modes of the app works

Google confirms the improvement of its Google Maps ‘bicycle mode’, which will now offer much more details of the routes so that cyclists can pedal safer and with more information.

It’s been a couple of years since Google presented the ‘bike mode’ of Maps, although the truth is that the majority of bike enthusiasts, and also the not so enthusiasts who use this means of transport to get around the city, we had been requesting improvements in Google Maps for cycling routes for a long time both urban and out of town.

It seems that in Mountain View, although in a very discreet way, they had picked up the gauntlet, and by following the trail of 9to5Google we can confirm that Google Maps has indeed greatly improved its mode for bicyclesoffering more detailed information for bike routes now that the use of these vehicles “has increased by more than 40% worldwide”.

Google Maps bikes available

The Google Maps app needed to improve bike routes.

In fact, it is that with the new features of Google Maps we can compare bike routes and even get details and new high level options how to choose “more bike lanes” in case they exist or perform “less turns” to better calculate our cycling routes.

But let’s not stop here, these are all the major improvements Google has announced in their press release:

  • the new section “Very Steep Climbs” will offer an altimetry graph of the routeand will point out the highest and lowest points.
  • Breasts will show flights of stairs identified, if they exist on the route.
  • We will see that the section “Roads” you can provide us now a percentage of bike lanes within the routeknowing firsthand how long we will be sharing the road with cars and trucks.
The best tricks for Google Maps

But not only this, because Google Maps will also now offer more specific granular details and concise for the section of the trip, being able to know with a very detailed breakdown what kind of road will we travel in each case and under what conditions.

Definitely important information that we all wanted in Google Mapsand that it has taken a long time but finally it has come to stay. Gone are the days of pedaling to our destination without previously knowing if there would be very hard slopes or if the place was going to be excessively busy with vehicles.

They say from Google that these new improvements will arrive in the next few weeks for the “hundreds of cities where cycling data is available”so stay tuned because surely very soon you will be able to consult in detail your cycling routes from Maps and without having to leave the mobile.
