Blood pressure represents the force exerted by the blood on the blood vessels as it passes through them so that this vital liquid reaches all parts of our body. In this sense, hypertension refers to the increase in said force that is capable of producing different types of damage to our system and that is recognized as a chronic disease that can result in serious health conditions.
Different risk factors are known that promote hypertension such as family history, age, race, high salt intake, sedentary lifestyle, as well as excessive intake of certain foods and, in particular, of a drink widely recognized worldwide for which There are various reports that demonstrate its significant impact on blood pressure after daily consumption.
Likewise, it is reported that the change in our intake habits, avoiding its consumption or reducing it, significantly prevents hypertension in people. This drink is consumed globally, often without control, and today it represents an important public health problem in the world, we refer to alcohol.
There is a large body of scientific evidence summarized in the World Journal Cardiology that highlights the association of hypertension with alcohol consumption. The reports that describe it range from epidemiological, preclinical and clinical studies (conducted in humans) that point in the same direction: alcohol is associated with a higher frequency of hypertension and an increased risk of cardiovascular diseases.
In this sense, in addition to the fact that the consumption of high doses of ethanol causes liver, gastrointestinal and nerve damage, it also affects the cardiovascular level in a very important way. Specifically, high ethanol consumption is reported as more than three drinks a day in both men and women, although in general it is recommended that moderate alcohol intake be based on: two drinks a day for men under 65 years of age and one drink a day for men over 65 and women of any age.
In such a way that keeping the recommended alcohol consumption to a minimum or avoiding it can help prevent suffering from this disease that is known as silent because many people are not diagnosed in time since they do not present clear symptoms and its clinical manifestation occurs in short periods of time.
Although it is described that the specific mechanism that promotes hypertension due to alcohol consumption is still unknown, various processes have been proposed that are potentially altered by excessive consumption of this substance, these being: imbalance of the central or sympathetic nervous system, which are a cardiovascular regulatory centers; deterioration of the baroreceptors that are sensors responsible for detecting changes in blood pressure; exacerbated stimulation of the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system and imbalance in the endothelium, which is a very important mediator of blood pressure, caused by inflammation and oxidative damage promoted by ethanol in the organism.
So now you know, moderating your alcohol consumption to the recommended amounts (or less) or, much more effectively, abstaining from its intake can significantly improve your health and prevent the onset of hypertension.
